However Ive been studying many of the artists whos work i really admire (Wayne Reynolds in particular) and came to see that most of them setup a super solid underdrawing... soooo im doing my best to get back into what i once ONLY did: LINES.

not the easiest thing doing with a tablet.... maybe a cintiq would make it a much more pleasurable experience.... one that I hope to finally get my hands on as Playmesh went ahead and authorized getting me (and team :P) one to test drive!

With this method i just hope to have much more of my thinking done with the piece vs. free form painting and creating/erasing as I go along. That and to strengthen my draftsmanship.

Hopefully as I work through it, the progress/levelin' up with start to show.

This is the start of my new portfolio, i think theres enough odds and ends in here to inspire a good story, as is the aim of any personal piece I do, maybe Ill think of a couple more details to throw in on my next session w/ fresh eyes. Otherwise ill start doing some color/light studies and start to render out this bidness. ;PRyan Portillohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16002168426560446398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1718780761512123597.post-19940690001917914892012-01-31T09:36:00.000-08:002012-01-31T09:39:37.832-08:00bruce lee painter<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 393px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqaiyBoPsaSoV8DdeNkgV0Le7wDY51mdeprTc9NMcRxyiZ4uT4cC62GXC2eNJt3yPOkdS7GgrD8Ueb0JfIoUNbMM7fWYdxYXBTiWWPHkJJ5oDvwXHbYzxeGWe6g7MAbQ0-tlexVOeUcK5e/s400/bruce-Lee.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703852103451771842" />
got much more to experiment with.... doing glazes and the like to replicate what I would do w/ traditional materials... Photoshop is no doubt a powerhouse for creating digital art, but i think Painter has some slickness that photoshop just cant match and that would be its brushes and brush engine. The feel and customization allowed is pretty damn fresh. :)

i had quite a time going through all bagillion of the brushs, trying to see which ones would fit my work flow best, and after literally an all nighter, I managed to nail down a few and tame them to my liking. The funny thing is that they really do match traditional mediums with some slickness, but since i have been working PS brushes for so long I kept trying to modify the cool traditional brushes into the more digital PS set... luckily it didnt take me that long to realize what i was doing and i let go and then just started painting with a grin.

Very cool and fun program. I hope i can spin some digital painting with a bit more control with Painter and set myself apart from the legions of PS users.... >:PRyan Portillohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16002168426560446398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1718780761512123597.post-20729994000482905692011-08-24T09:31:00.000-07:002011-08-24T09:34:41.177-07:00*sounds of boards breaking*<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPm0WE_QhrtI-nLRULAingsiiE7S0BIIwgr7Q_4xO0tjtVTk2FZUVOYAbQwo-1Lp84k2Fs1sqMwvkulOBpeBYPFo4EI67w3gKRxHIJmInEe-W4B6Y_1z7P8q21rEceq4S8jrt2CqCitIa/s400/bruce+lee+study.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5644461756346237746" />

That came as a complete surprise as I didnt know id get to see the actual work in print form, that was pretty neat. In any case gave me an excuse and safe bet to show a piece from that art order: This was a half page illo wherein i had to show some creepy town just doing its creepy thang...

The funny thing about receiving this art job was that I consider myself primarily a character artist.... figurative work... and this piece which payed the best of the bunch had no mention of any characters... (obviously you see i snuck a partial one in :P) so it was both a surprise to get it given that my portfolio has no scenes in it nor really any backgrounds for that matter, but I also took it as a challenge and nod to the art director for seeing through just the surface details and into what i was capable of. :) This i hear is not quite the norm with ADs because they dont really care for guess work when choosing artists for their particular project(s). They want to see as close to what the art job requires as possible and hire therein accordingly...

In any case it was fun to push myself and I think it came out pretty decent and made me want to push myself further to better my backgrounds in pieces thereafter.

Ill probably post some more of what Ive been working on as they are being published soon... in the mean time when I have a chance, hopefully ill be able to whip out some new portfolio pieces as I really want in with some D&D action and or Magic.... maybe get in on some WOW bidness..... but ultimately some cover work for say maybe.... Tor? ... all in good time. ;)Ryan Portillohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16002168426560446398noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1718780761512123597.post-71178845557512456172010-12-19T11:24:00.000-08:002010-12-19T11:29:02.618-08:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8sIX6f5HPdR0oTuPYCTQpcyMzQV44e2JRiaK9omzTorgpaCvNZUrEs4eRLMtaSuRwebRKawipTIbi5rUI6UPmnGSz9vnYxGcaW5idl93k-ezg8VbAS6yxNCgAieARjCUo0ebiJve238Vs/s400/supernatural.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552477522559650818" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgklGjyFUWMH56gKnfohgkjQ4JcsLI0cJJeuXlgdaLrbHi7NH7TC8NvhEcHrHH3L0_Y8n8hZJJc3GuIVe0UAkRvSMjP7i3UmX0Ugy9NjRwG-Pjd7lMoUBvt8m4z5-f7RMBUbGIhD4VhgTU8/s400/supernatural+revamp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5552477524343654370" />
revamping an old character illo that just never got the attention it deserved. Im not sure how many no/white background characters Ill be doing after this as I realize that its really difficult to later ad in a background vs. from the get go and likewise having a background enables a bit more Chiaroscuro given the ability to push and pull with light and dark along the edges... hmm... :) I have several more character pieces that just need some wacom lovin to finishem up and hopefully ill get to them soon, whether or not i make them more illustrations vs. rendered concepts remains to be seen... :P

Got my 3rd Paizo gig in a row, feeling pretty good to be doing some fairly steady freelance, but I also realize were i doing this full time id have to be knocking out portfolio pieces side by side with my current freelance assignment because until i start landing cover work or just bigger jobs it would be very difficult to make a living... But i suppose thats relative. In any case, the other interesting bit of art bidness info is at least with RPG companies, at least with my experience so far, is that its payment upon publication.... or more so a bit after publication. Soooo for instance if Im doing steady work for a company, a good batch each month and payment is not for 3-4 months after each deadline... before I get my first check I could very well have thousands of dollars in what is essentially IOU's... makes for something to look forward to when the cycles finally overlap, when im getting checks for jobs i completed months ago, kind of like finding cash in your pocket.... a lot of cash. :P In any case, its definately something im noting for when i really start upping my output and perhaps seriously consider quitting my non art day job... Got to have money in the bank to hold up for the inbetweens of jobs and payments.....Ryan Portillohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16002168426560446398noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1718780761512123597.post-79414295308612617432010-11-22T21:04:00.001-08:002010-11-22T21:18:21.020-08:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBVa2V8wv5Utx1-h0xkGndMqWJGhSTCZpJ4T3n_JexOYrU73CE8M_wo-7f_y3_YkMUAxmoHWr8WPINXQQ-y0hBXF85KdXNKSuCu2GAUogNnfVC_D4Le2ObWFoda3sQLIaOA3-o3ri9lDNY/s320/father+Grimburrow2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542609833153179362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLTnqIeKeE1Exm8lj4JadRwOjwnq2GDgRuPF8f8gXpIc88uwIM4HYrzIgyIrUeBgMkYtcx5Xfgec8rM9a-il-zd72COM3e7zd_sxACL8MNLGvKOW7QtIKPV4JiuZKi0Si3wfeDjLGGx8LQ/s320/rjptest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5542609821347081938" />
Been a little bit....
